The LFS was out of creushed coral today. So she said she could give me the closest alternative which is this rock which naturally buffers the same way as crushed coral but less effect. She says it would take more than 1 rock to actually see results in KH and PH readings but I only bought one be suspicious. Can someone tell me if I add this rock to my filter, will it raise my PH and KH? The water stats right now are

kH - 2
pH - 7.2

Why not just use baking soda? A little bit goes a long ways, start with a teaspoon, wait a couple of hours, check kh and ph. If the kh is still really low, add a little bit more. You just have to keep up with it as you do water changes.

How much should I add skitty? For my given stats?

if you want to test to see if the rock will raise you levels then put a few drops of vinegar on it,if it bubbles then it will buffer.

Or keep it in a bucket of water for a few days then test.

What are you water tests now?

Hard to ID the rock... but I'd be surprised if it hurt anything if you added it to the tank. I'd also be surprised if it has much of an effect. (Maybe if you added 20 or 30 of those rocks...)

Did you ask her when she's to get crushed coral in? Any other LFSs in the area?

That rock is called Moon Rock (up here at least) I also was told it will bring up the KH. I have a couple of pieces in my sump I'll let you know how it works.

I ended up buying a bag of it, stashing it under the cabinet. I will eventually use it all up:p

Some of the limestone has undesirable stuff in it. Especially around the lake, what with all the garbage dumped in from the summer people.

Someone mentioned "Moon Rock" and it may or may not also be what we here call Lace Rock. Not sure if it raises kH or pH. I do know that Tuffa will raise it.
