Rosey Reds

Do rosey red minnows school? or stay in a group at all? lol
I was going to let my neice pick 5-6 of them out for our pond, and I'd prefere them too school.

Most minnows do school, I'd get more then 5 or 6 though, they'd be great for mosquito control too.

How big of a pond and what all in it?

2 shubunkins, 2 fancies, 2 comets and 3 fish that I'm pretty sure are koi, but they are about 2"-3", and I will be upgrading next spring to a 1500+.

there is also a couple of frogs, sometimes.

I'm almost positive they school, as your not supposed to keep them alone or else they go crazy. Just remember to quarinteen (sp?) them first because most rosy reds are sold as feeder fish and are often diseased and mistreated and you don't want them to get your other fish sick.

no, they don't school, they just reproduce. I originally put 50 in my pond (25000gal) and now have hundreds and hundreds and they are everywhere but never traveling together ... lol ... I would STRONGLY recommend against them. Although, with a small pond like yours you could always drain to get them out. I just wish I had never introduced them into mine.

I bet you don't have as many mosquitoes in your yard as your neighbors do.

You could also set up minnow traps,capture them and sell them as bait to fishermen.

You have a secondary income right under your nose.

well, go to this site ... http://www.americanponders.com/forum/index.php ... and ask about Rosey Reds and/or mosquito fish over there ... then DUCK! ... kinda like snails in aquariums, if you're one of the people who wants to get rid of them, it'll probably never happen.

Most non schooling fish will school if they feel threatened. Not sure if rosy reds are schooling fish, but your KOI may make them lol.
