the puffers you can buy in an LFS, such as the dwarf puffers, or other freshwater types.... do they actually puff up?

yes, when they are being attacked. i've seen it, unfortunately, when there was one punk puffer nipping away at all the others in the tank. those poor puffers had no tails or fins and couldn't really swim as a result, all they could do was puff up and float around and be nipped at.
