I recently purchased a 30 gal. tank and set it up with everything except the rocks for my tank. I wanted to start cycling my tank with the ammonia so I did so with out my rocks. I went the next day to a decorative rock shop and purchased two rocks. I went home, cleaned them as thoroughly as I possibly could, and began to place them into the tank. As I did so, dirt and silt started coming out of crevices that I had not seen. This made my tank slightly cloudy. Can anyone help me? Do I have to start over and empty my tank? Please anybody help me.

Thanks

if your filter isn't taking care of it, you could turn the filter off and wait for all the dirt and such to settle on the bottom, then syphon it out. this will give your cycle a temporary delay, but only by a day or so. it shouldn't take too long for the dirt to settle.

It's just dirt. It will filter out and/or settle to the bottom. Don't worry.

Yep, agreed. Dirt is actually a really good media for bacteria--the small particle size provides more space for them to colonize. Odds of the dirt having anything nasty are pretty remote--even more remote that said nastiness will survive a) the cycle, b) submersion, c) complete lack of a host.

I'm locking this thread, and ask that additional advice be posted here:
