View Full Version : HELP : Gravel and Plants Compatibility
Hello,
I am new to freshwater keeping..
I have a tank with An albino Rainbow Shark, White Spot Tetra,Cardinal Tetra and Siamese Fighting Fish.
I am planning to put pea sized gravel and plants into the tank, any gravel or plants that I should avoid?
Thanks.

None of those fish burrow in the gravel, so just get something that you like.
Well I was afraid the gravel might hurt the Shark's... "feelers" (the ones beside the mouth)
And also will the food get lost in the gravel ? I dun wan my shark dying of starvation...
Thanks !

The shark will most likely root around in the gravel and dig out any food that he misses. As long as you keep the water quality good and are not using something like glass shards for substrate, the texture should be fine. Pretty much any storebought gravel is fine. I have fluorite in my 30gal, which is about as sharp as a normal substrate can get, and my cories were fine on it so I wouldn't worry about it.
glad to hear that, thanks !

How big is the tank?
Generally I would recommend keeping the Betta fish (Siamese fighting fish) alone or in a rather large tank with a small school of peaceful fish. The tetras are going to need full schools (5-7 fish) to be healthy in the tank. and the Shark could become aggressive as it becomes older.
Just a little heads up, I'm thinking gravel may be the least of your worries in the coming weeks/months.
That being said, normal pea gravel from your lfs should suffice :)

Pea size is not good for plants roots.Something smaller.
My Tank Size is
=162 Litres
= 42 Gallons (US Liquid)
= 36 Gallons (US Dry)
= 35 Gallons (UK)
I have changed my mind and intent to use fake plants for now first...
Well ... My shark doesnt care about the Tetras... My Bettas dont really chase the Cardinal Tetras, but one of the few White spot Tetras always bullies the Cardinals.. As in one against the WHOLE bunch !!
A few of my cardinal tetras are dead.. I dont think its the fishes.. I think its the water... Will post water parameters soon..
Thanks

might not care now but are known to just snap keep a eye on the shark.
Oh, I plan to get Microsorium pteropur 'Windelov'(Midground) and Hydrophila Polysperma(background) 'Rosanevig'.
I went to a shop, it had the Wibdelov, however, some of the edges of the leaves have blackened.I know its unhealthy but, it it some sign of a disease or sth?
If I were to buy it anyway, can I just trim those off and add fertiliser? Will that solve the problem?
Oh and also, I have lots of tiny air bubbles rising from the gravel the the surface... That's supposed to be good right?
Thanks
