I know it is supposed to be a budget approach. In the long run is it OK? Is it useful? Comments please! :)
I believe in using soil, I have been doing so for 15 years of off and on aquarium keeping. I don't use the vermiculite just topsoil covered with sand or gravel, and have had very good results for a low tech low to medium light tank. I combine this system with C02 and a continuous water change system for a very low maintenance system. I can ignore the tanks for weeks at a time (other than feeding) with no bad side affects.

it can work a lot of people use it. just have to make sure you dont mix it up too much.
