so the boyfriend and i went to walmart today to buy a tank for his moms new betta. when we walked by the fish that they had, we noticed something that disturbed both of us. they had angelfish....in plastic cups!!! they had them stored the same way they store their bettas. 3 out of the 5 were already dead, so we bought the other two. they're still not very active in their tank and they haven't eaten yet, but we didn't expect them to. hopefully they'll liven up a little more once they get adjusted. here are the pictures of their old accomodations followed by their new ones.

well that's why we plan to speak with the manager tomorrow when we go in to replace a broken tank we just bought today for one of our new bettas. it's just cruel to keep them in cups like that.

NEVER BUY FISH FROM WALLMART NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just like you said every one you buy they get more and if they show profit from them then they will keep more and on and on. they will however probably never do what it takes to realy care for fish, they are a profit only company. if they were to trane, hire with exp, properly house and care for fish then their would go the profit. so PLEASE for the fish talk people out of buying at fish at walmart if posible and at leaste dont do it yourself. you may have saved 2 fish and killed dozens more (not trying to be mean). the odds are the two angels will probably die anyway. the darker one is showing signs with the way its facing the surface tilted like that. if it has been doing this a while it will probably die 1-3 days sorry just my exp. if neather are eating then its not good, and once you stress an angel its pretty much over. good luck, i wish you and your fish good health.

All my fish, regardless where I bought them, usually didn't eat the first day or so. I wouldn't be too concerned about that. My Angel in the 12gal Eclipse goes towards the top sometimes just like that, have had him now for about a year. Give them a week and see if they don't change. Sucks to see Walmart do that crap, but glad to see you did what you wanted to do....Sure, they may buy more fish for the shelf, but these two are safe. At least you're trying to talk with Walmart and make a problem known. Fish get shipped in enclosures smaller than that to get to their destinations, but **** Walmart, you don't have to keep them that way once you get them!

update!! this morning both of them ate. while it wasn't a lot, it was something. they also seem to be moving out of their little corners and away from the surface. they're also hanging out together. we have hope for these little guys. i understand what you guys are saying about how it increases their profits and they will just order more...but if we didn't buy them, they would have died and then they would have just reordered more that would sit there and die in cups. so at least we saved two of them.

Everybody can say, dont buy them blah blah blah but personaly, I cant leave them. Yes they will get more, but if you dont buy them, somebody else will, who knows they would put them in a cup thinking their like bettas, I see it on a completely different angel, and knowing I saved, or tried, a few they have wouldnt make me feel better than leaving them there for other people to buy.

:eek3:

ok thats just crazy.

both of them look surprisingly healthy, and its good that they started to eat. just because they are faced up at an angle towards the surface way doesnt mean that they are going to die. plus, angels can be slow to adjust to a new environment.

my question though is- why?
unlike male bettas, angels can be kept together in the same tank. they are usually gone before they even get to steak out territories and begin to fight over them, and they are schooling fish.

Leaving those angels in cups sitting on the shelf like they do bettas is nothing short of disgusting! It is bad enough they do this to bettas. Personally I don't think they should do this to any fish although I understand it with bettas only because they are ordered in mass and cannot be kept in the same tank togather. That is just th way it is. However, doing this to the angels is unforgivable. Definetly talk to the management about this. They should not be allowed to do this to them.

I know the argument of not buying fish from places like this bit personally, I don't think I could of left those angels there either. Good luck with them.

thanks to all of you that are supporting us. they still seem to be doing really well, so we're definitely happy that we got them out of there. we didn't get the chance to make it to walmart today because i am in the process of moving, but tomorrow is free...so we shall go and they're gonna get what is coming to them. it came at a nice time though, because we are in the process of getting a 70 gallon tank set up and weren't sure what to do as our centerpiece fish...now we know. :)
