Hi,

I went rock hunting today and did awesome. The only thing I wonder about is one I picked up. It looks like it must have some iron in it? It's kinda rusty? I know our water has a pretty high iron content because the tub gets stained a bit pink, you know? It's a really cool poreous rock so I really want it in my tank, but will it be ok?

No It is what is clasified as a ferous rock and wil rust and contaminate the water, probably killing you fish unless you have like 300 plants to absorb the iron content fast enough.

****... ok so that one's out. What about slate with a touch of rusty stuff? Some of my slate pieces seem to have a bit of the same. Will that matter?

test with a magnet, if the magnet grips it is ferrous and is poison for you aquarium. but first try to scrape off the rust.
