I was wondering if you need a sponge filter for breeding kribs or convicts.

No. Its good to use a sponge filter in the fry tank.

But do you have to use a sponge?

You dont HAVE to. Its a good way to clean a bare bottom tank without sucking up babies.

sponge filters are good for fry but you dont need to use one. i use hobs with a sponge over the intake for some of the tanks. as for the reg tank hob or canister is fine.

like most said you don't have to use them..
but they work well.
they make sponge filters for a lot of different sized tanks.
if you plan on letting th parents raise the fry a sponge filter is not a bad investment.
if you separate the fry from the parents then it is best to use a sponge filter.
I have better results when using a sponge filter in fry tanks.

if you dont get a sponge filter, at least put one over the intake to keep the babies from getting sucked into the impeller.

I breed Convicts in my 40g and in a 29g and I have Emperor 400's on both tanks and no sponges or prefilters.

Sponge filters are great for fry tanks not only to be able to keep your fry in the tank ratehr than sucked up into a HOB or canister but also for the fact that the fry can graze on the microorganisms in the sponge between feedings

I know this sounds a bit cheap what if i put sponge around internal filters?

You really only need the sponge on the intake tube. This is only for the babies protection. (Although the post about fry eating off the filter is a good point).

thats what the plants are for lol.... you could get a sponge filter with a power head. if you have a internal filter already you could mod it to use it.
