Hey everyone.........I'm really wanting to get my tank to have all live plants instead of fake. Right now I have 3 plants of Water Wisteria and some of those Walmart Bulbs that are growing nicely. Tomorrow, I'm moving back into my apartment at college and I was going to go to Petsmart and pick up some live plants to bring back home to my 55g. What would be some nice, easy to grow plants that don't take much light? I have 2 regular flourescent bulbs that came with my tank. I also want something that will grow fairly thick and tall. Any ideas? Thanks!

I also have a tank in my college apartment and a limited budget. In my 30g and my 5g, I have hornwort growing. It's great to grow in low light, which is for me less than 1 wpg (watt per gallon). I also have two onions that have doubled in size and a banana plant in my 30 gallon. The hornwort will grow all over the tank and can be planted or free floating.

I wouldn't go so far as to say "most". Some are not aquatic, in particular, the Mondo Grass they have. The Anacharis is usually one of the least expensive, easily cared for and is a low light plant to boot. They usually have that in stock. Just do your research from the link plantling gave before you go shopping (and after you see what they have), and you'll be fine.

You got the Walmart bulbs to grow? :bowing:

I think at one point I was able to get these low to medium light plants from PetSmart: Watersprite, Wisteria, Java Fern, Melon Sword (medium high light), Amazon Sword, Red brown Cabomba, and banana plant. But I've seen some non-aquatic also, like Brazilian Sword and Green Hedge. Just be careful. Here's a link to some non-aquatic plants from the PlantGeek site:

Petco has tubed plants that can be disappointing. I've bought a total of five tubed plants over two visits and only three of the tubes had actual aquarium plants -- that have done well: the java fern (which has had many babies) and the amazon sword (which split easily into two). I got some wisteria the last time and haven't had it long enough to judge, but it seems okay so far. The other two tubed plants I bought turned out to be terrestrial and disappointing.

I also went to a Petsmart last month and got some bacopa that seems to be doing okay so far.

I suggest making up a list of plants you are sure will have a good chance of doing okay in your set up (because you don't want to waste money), then take the list to the stores you visit and buy only what you know will do okay -- and you'll know because you will have done your research here :)

Well I went out to Petsmart today and got 5 bundles of what looks to be Asian Ambulia?? It's really thick and bunchy and has a very dark green color. At least that's what I think it is anyway lol. Anyway, for anyone who has it, how hard is it to keep and will it grow a lot? Thanks!
