I've been wanting discus fish for a very long time and the other day i finally found a little store in china town that sold them. So i bought one. The only thing is I'm sure what type of discus this particular one is. it looks like a royal blue but I'm not sure. any help would be appreciated.

I'm going back tomorrow to get another one.

it's a bit early to tell as the young discus does not have it's full colors.

mine were called Brilliant Turquoise, i think the breeder can call them whatever they want. nice fish, what size tank?

my tank is 55gallons it currently has a few tetras, barbs, danio's, 1 angel, and 1 ram. i plan on getting rid of the danio's due to their hyperactivity, which my discus doesn't seen to like very much.

what kind of barbs?

have you studied much on the Discus?

you realize that they prefer warm water? this will make a difference on the tank mates.

yes i have studied on discus, my water is 82 F and is filtered through peat, the ph is 6.5 and the hardness is 4gh ammonia:0 nitrite:0 nitrate:7ppm i have 2 golden barbs btw.

then you know that 82 is a bit cool for juvenile discus.

and you also must know that the color pattern is not set on this age discus. it's true colors won't show for a few months.

the Ph does not have to be low or filtered thru peat. a stable pH is more desirable. if you plan on breeding discus than you may want to lower the pH but usually it's easier to do by using an RO/DI filter and adding back the proper salts(minerals)

you will also probably need to set up a holding tank for water changes if you are filtering with peat as the Ph shift will be stressful at water change . the water params should be very close when you are doing water changes.(since you are filtering thru peat to lower the pH.)

discus can thrive in a higher pH as long as the pH is stable.

how's your feeding schedule.
the folks that had this discus prior to you may not have been feeding this young discus as much as it should be fed(sloped forehead and large eyes) discus should be round in shape with little to no slope on the forehead(crest)
