I wouldn't mind trying out Rams.
Do I have to have them in a planted tank? I have no interest in trying plants,
my thumb is green outdoors in the garden, but in a tank it is far from green.

I would at least provide some driftwood and rocks for hideouts. I used to have a small group of 9 some years back in a 55g that actually formed a couple pairs. I had many clutches of eggs but they never survived due to the corys and other fish in the tank with them. I REALLY like Bolivian Rams and I found them a bit easier and more enjoyable to keep compared to their slightly smaller counterpart the Blue Ram. My tank was planted by the way, but I have seen them in open water tanks as well. When they color up it is quite a beautiful little fish! How many are you thinking of keeping? I saw them today in the LFS for $11 each.

- Mind if i ask a question on this thread? -

Do rams eat small tetras and such?

No they will not eat small tetras. While breeding they get territorial and may show aggression toward a tetra that may wander too close, but they will not prey on tetras.

I can do fake plants, driftwood, and rocks with no problem. If I decide to go with Rams, I don't think I could do more them 4, and that may be a crowded tank. I was thinking of rams in a 29g I picked up the other day. Was going down the street in a neighboring town and there was a 29g on a stand 5g bucket of nice looking gravel, driftwood, and filters with a big sign on it that said FREE Needless to say I jumped out the truck to grab it.
GBR's here when I've seen them are $11 I'll imagine Bolivians won't be any different.

Is there such a thing as a Brazilian Ram? A LFS has some fish that look exactly like Bolivians labelled Brazilians. I assumed they were the same fish, but is there a difference? (Sorry for the small thread hijack, but the typo brought up something I was wondering about.)

No fish really needs live plants, just make sure they have hiding places and such. My bolivians have never bothered my tetras or any other fish for that matter, but they havnt spawned yet so i havnt seen there true nastyness :p

No there are only two dwarf rams
Mikrogeophagus Altispinosa- Bolivian
Mikrogeophagus Ramirezi- Blue Ram

to date these are the only two in this category..there are color morphs of these but they are still blue rams or bolivian rams.

keep plenty of structure and breka up the line of sight. this helps curve aggression from rival males and females.
they can get along in a group. when they aren't spawning.

Four rams would be good in a 29 gallon... You could probably add some more fish with them too.... I have a community tank that's 29 gallon too, see my siggy. :) They don't need plants, necissarily, but live plants aren't that hard if they have the right amount of light and good subtrate... And plants help your tank from getting overrun by algea. Not that you'll get tons of algea if you don't have plants, but still, they do help. There are lots of easy-to-care-for types that require virtually no work to grow.
