can i put regular tap water in a big bucket. and wait a few days for it to age. and use that water to fill a s/w tank? or is water conditioner neccessary. i cant get a r/o system.
I use tap water for my reef tank. Some people will say RO/DI is necessary, and you can buy it at most decent LFSs. I have well water, but if you use dechlor you can probably use tap water. I would test it first, I would only use it if it has 0 nitrates and phosphates.
personaly, i would not. The elements that are in tap water, even after a conditioner can still cause undesirable algae to grow...Do any of you local fish shops sell RO or RO/DI water?
I started my tank with RO water but our closest fish store that sale ro water is an hours drive away so since then I have used tap water with conditioner and the tank is almost 5 moths old..So far I count my blessings that I have no had any algae problems at all.Keeping my fingers crossed.
You can also try getting some 5 gallon jugs and filling them at some local grocery stores. For instance, the Safeway (grocery store) near me has an RO machine that chugs out water for $0.33 per gallon. That's one option anyway.
Btw...I use it for drinking as well. I know that there was a debate on here a while ago that says that drinking RO water is bad for you. I will submit that I have been drinking almost nothing but that for a long time and have had no issues. It's simply the best tasting water.
I would personally use a conditioner on the water whether it is aged or not.The bacteria in the sand and rock will live..You will have some die off and that is normal no matter what type water you use.
