View Full Version : does anyone with high KH water have problems keeping the Jell-O as jelly?

Last time I lived here I had problems with my CO2 because the Jell-O melted within days and from then on it's not Jell-O CO2 anymore and doesn't last long. I thought I just mixed it wrong. Then I was back home and that batch lasted about 3 months. Now I'm back, and the Jell-O isn't Jell-O here! Has anyone noticed the same thing with high KH water? It's the only thing I can think of. Although I can't figure out why the Jell-O would care.

I've had it melt like that when it had set less than overnight, setting 4 hours is not enough to be firm.
I've also had it melt when I set it in the window to warm up.
I dont actually use Jello, however, I use Knox gelatine "Knox Blocks" with water and sugar substituted for the fruit juice. It is a firmer version of jello, sort of like Jello Wigglers recipe. Finger food.

I always let it set at least overnight, in fact I usually don't have time to do it right away and it might sit in the fridge for a day or two. My roommates never did get what the point of Jell-O in a bottle is :) I have to try making up another batch with water from home, see if that's really what the problem is.

I have hard water and this mix does fine. I use 4 packets of Knox gelatine, with 2 cups of sugar and 4 cups of water. If you follow the directions for Knox Blocks on the package, they say to sprinkle the gelatine over 1 cup of cold water to mix, then add 3 cups of boiling juice (I substitute 3 cups of hot water with 2 cups sugar).
Chill overnight in a pan, then cut into cubes that fit into your bottle. The cubes allow a greater surface area for the yeast to act on, and the blocks are more firm than the standard jello mix.

That's a good idea with the cubes. I'll have to try that.
I actually just got a Brita filter pitcher or whatever they're called, and out of curiosity I tested the water it gives - ppH 6.0, KH 4. So I'm gonna start using that to make Jell-O, and also mix some in with my tank water to lower the KH. Thanks for the replies
