Im looking in to the possibilty of getting a snowflake eel. I had originally planned on doing topless, but I know you need to cover the tank. Do I have to use the glass covers that came with the tank? The only thing I dont get is how do I put the intakes of the skimmer and power filter on the tank, with the openings completely covered in glass. What are my options for covering it?

You can use plastic eggcrate (lighting diffuser) to cover the tank as long as the holes in the eggcrate are smaller than the Eel. You can also get plastic netting from garden center's which will do the same job and is alot finer. Both of these allow more oxygen exchange than glass tops and are easier to cut around the intakes of your skimmer etc. The only thing to consider is that they can reduce your light intensity.

The biggest thing about closed top tanks is heat. It's going to build up because water cannot evaporate.
The best thing to do is to build a wall around the top of your tank out of acrylic. That way you can cut holes for all your equipment easily.

The eel you see will not go over that height for to do so, it would need to be a much larger species. But still one should be always ready for the unexpected to happen for what many assume to be impossible, many were always proven wrong.
For the eel looks to be only able to move about for it should really have a bit larger tank then that, but what do I know. But still I seen many things that some wouldn`t ever think twice about for being there be much rock work in this tank, an eel of a bit larger size can or may manage to push its body over the top and once over, its body remaining still in the tank would follow through over the top.
So if any mis-spelling for im just started with a new Internet provider and I need to get me the Microsoft office to assist me in word checking.
