Treating Tail Rot -- how long?

I've started treating my fish for fin rot, developed after the stress of the ph mess I was previously. I followed the instructions for using Jungle Fungus Clear on Wednesday night, and my fish seem to be improving. However, I'm not sure how fast they should be improving and therefore for how long I should treat. The package says to add a second dose (after a 25% water change) in four days, if necessary -- what does "if necessary" mean? If they are not completely healed? Some of their fins looked pretty chewed, others are quite minor -- so I would imagine the rate of healing will be relative to that. Behaviour-wise they seem much, much happier this morning.

I prefer to add less rather than more to the tank, but if necessary, I will certainly do it.

I know you can use Melafix to help with fin rot and it won't taint your water.

The stuff I used turns my water bright green for a day... its a bit freaky, heh. I did opt for the second dose... the fins are healing, but some of them still look a little rough, and I want to make sure that the fungus is completely healed. I read up more on the web, etc, and many places said its common to treat for 10 days (this will amount to an 8-day treatment).

Fish are looking *much* better overall... back to their old behaviours, and much, much calmer.

Often fin rot needs an antibiotic to cure it. Fungus is normally cottony in appearance. I am not a fan of Melafix.

Hmm, that's good to know.. I bought the Jungle Fungus Clear because it specifically stated fin rot on the package, but perhaps I need to investigate further. Their fins are growing back, but slowly (some better than others). I don't see any evidence of anything cottony -- just looks as if the fins were chewed up (seems to match the description of fin rot... and LFS agreed).

TwoTankAmin: Why not a fan of Melafix?

zanytomato: I've only used Jungle Labs products once. Why once? It killed 60% of my fish population (5 Tetras, 3 Corys).

Oh jeez... hitman, can you tell me more? Was it the same product that I'm using?

I haven't actually put the second dose in yet.. wanting to give them a bit more time to see how they're doing.

I have two products from Jungle Labs. One is Ich Clear, the other is Fungus Clear. I never used the Fungus Clear (which is the one you have). I used the Ich Clear and that killed off a lot of my fish. After that, I just lost faith. I'm sure there are many other people that can tell you that their Jungle Lab product worked for them just fine. I just had a bad experience.

Just for information sake, I used HALF the dose that was recommended by the directions as I knew I had some pretty sensitive fish in the tank. I'm glad I didn't put in the full dosage. My mollies survived, my platies survived, and go figure my Oto's survived the Ich treatment. All other perished.
