I was wondering if cichlids growth rate is slowed depending on tank size and tank environment such as overcrowding. I know the quality of the food makes a difference.
Are africans affected differntly than south american? Just wondering.

Yes, I firmly believe all fish can be affected by tank size, and overcrowding (severe) can affect quality of water and lead to excessive stress and quality of life.

Just say if the water quality was'nt a factor affecting the quality of life somewhat, just tank size and population, would the growth rate be slowed?

They would become stunted.

I believe stress is the key here.
Bad water quality = stress and bad health = stunted fish.
Overcrowding = stress = stunted fish
Not enough food = stress and bad health = stunted fish.

Hi Guys,
In my experiences with "open drip systems" that move close to 50% water change daily, I have seen fish reach their miximum sizes in 36" long tanks.(oscars for example). By removing the pheromones/hormones, eliminating ammonium/nitrite/nitrate, and reducing DOC's you can grow healthy fish in larger densities in smaller conatiners.
Most Discus hatcheries use drip systems and their bio-loads are huge compared to what could be accomplished by a closed system.(our aquariums).
Just something to think about, Rich

I agree Mr. FM....I should have asked what filtration they had up front...
