Hello all!

I have an 18 gallon tank. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to list the specifications but here goes:

Bio wheel filter
SeaClone 100 protein skimmer
1 powerhead

2-3 inches live sand
10-12 pounds live rock

50/50 compact flourescent lights

1 yellow striped maroon clown
1 orange spotted goby
1 mandarin dragonette (i know, i know, he's being adopted out to someone with a larger tank)
1 snowflake eel
1 serpent star
1 blue coral banded shrimp (hitcher, i lucked out here)
2 blue leg hermit crabs(hitchers)
a few mushroom corals
several snails (hitchers)
about 10 teensy starfish (also hitchers)
1 tiny anemone (smaller than a dime, also a hitcher, and i fear he's one of those bad little ones that i hear about)

So...am I terribly overstocked? I fear so but the hubby just won't quit bringing stuff home from the LFS.

Has anyone had any experience with the seaclone? I hear nothing but bad things about them it seems. Of course this was after Husband brought it home. It also seems to be spitting jillions of tiny bubbles into my tank which annoys me and the fish. Also, is it possible to overskim your tank? A friend of mine told me to only run it a couple of days a week.

The orange spotted won't stop eating. How many times a day should I feed him? He chows down like he's starving every time i put food in the tank.

The maroon is just awesome. He's got such a personality. He seems to be a picky eater though, in the sense that he doesn't seem to want to eat the same food twice in a row. One time it's flakes, one time it's minced shrimp, then brine shrimp, then bloodworms. Is this normal?

Should I be worried about the plague of tiny starfish?

I have heard that the snowflake with eat crustaceans, so far however he hasn't bothered anything. Is it only a matter of time? He's about 5 inches right now, but i keep him pretty well fed - shrimp, krill or squid about every other day.

Has anyone used Purpleup with success? So far I haven't seen much progress, the coralline seemed to be doing alright before I started adding purpleup, but spreading rather slowly. About how long does it take for coralline to grow?

Well that's about it for now, thanks in advance to anyone patient enough to reply.

And also, is there any benefit/downfall to using the pre-mixed saltwater that you can buy?

And I hear a lot about how your DSB can eventually release nasty stuff, does periodically mixing up the sand help with this or hurt?

First off...Welcome to Aquaria Central..!!!

So...am I terribly overstocked? I fear so but the hubby just won't quit bringing stuff home from the LFS.

Personaly, i would say so yes...the eel is the one which pushes you overboard for me..I would not recomend having one of them in a tank less than 50 Gallons, some even suggest 75gal..You need to fit a lit to the tank, with a padlock on it...that will stop anymore fish going in there....he he he he he

Yes, i have had a seaclone in the past..they are not the worlds best skimmers by any means, but, you have it on a small'ish tank, so its not so bad..The skimmer should be running 24/7 and empty the collection cup as and when required. The bubbles can be an issue with these, some use a lump of sponge on the exit to trap the bubbles before they go into the tank...

I think that unless you have something that is very needy and a sensitive species, which you dont in this case, recomend feeding every other day. One thing that we have to appreciate is that when these fish are out in the ocean, they do not get a meal on a plate every day, some can go days without finding their next meal...thats just my opinion, and i "Never" had a fish die on me, for any reason....

Should I be worried about the plague of tiny starfish?

The star fishies are more than likly asternia's....they are fine, some report them to be coral munchers, but, i have yet to be convinced of this fact...

Yes, crustations etc are the basics that form the snowflakes diet...this can of course be substituted with other meaty chunks..

Has anyone used Purpleup with success? So far I haven't seen much progress, the coralline seemed to be doing alright before I started adding purpleup, but spreading rather slowly. About how long does it take for coralline to grow?

Purpleup is a waste of money. Good coralline growth will appear and grow under its own time, providing good light, calcium, alk and magnesium are all present in the water column..

I hope this has helped you a little, and by all means, see what others say..And anymore quetions, shout them up...

personally, i dont think there is any benefit of buying it premixed...personally, i enjoyed mixing my own...plus, i like to do things for myself....

Any sand bed can release things back into the water column..Mixing the sand bed up is not a good thing, as you will release all kinds of nasties that will cause spikes in the water parameters, which could be potentially fatal, depending on what is in there....

Just an opinion of course..
