well my tank has been running great now, sump is all but perfect (evaporation is crazy fast) lights make the tank look great and i have a great dawn and dusk setting, fish look good, and the goby is cleaning the sand fairly well and guess what diatoms are all but gone..... so now my question is can i turn my sump off and empty it out and clean it out really well...there is a bunch of brown stuff on my pump and my heater and the floor of it and the sponge looks really dirty.....so is that ok or no?

to be completely honest it would be easier to syphon that junk out of the sump when you do a water change rather than break it all down.

You can, but as US stated its going to be a pain to break it all down. I'm dealing with figuring out how to keep all of the left over food from building up in my sump as well, along with some micro-bubbles.

Did you end up getting bio-balls for the wet/dry section of the filter or did you decide to go with LR Rubble?

you don't want to use bio-balls. they are only good to cycle the tank. just wanted to make a note. they trap too much dirt

Bioballs are fine if you do maintenance on them. Of course I still prefer using other methods of filtration.

On the cleaning of the sump I have to agree with wiping it down and syphoning during a water change instead of breaking it all down.

Clown...have you tried a rubble tower or filter sock to help with the micro bubbles?

I'll PM you the solution as this isn't my thread.

so today i did a test of my ammonia(0), ites(0), and ates(20), and salinity(1.023) (i have been slacking on the tank the past few days cause work and a new car has been occupying my time so thank god everything is good) so decided i was gonna syphon out the sump like everyone had suggested. and man was that thing dirty...i got one side out then i filled it up with tap water again and got the other side...i couldnt belive how much stuff had settled on the bottom of the sump..i guess thats good. i couldnt imagine all that stuff in my tank...yuck...but now its clean and ready to go.... oh and my diatoms are gone but now i got some hair algea...yaaayy gonna pick up another turbo or two this weekend hopefully to help with it...and im still not sure what kinda fish i really want a tang but 55 is small ehhh...well see..thanks for everyones help...ill post pics soon
