View Full Version : This 3 second memory crap...

I dont understand how a goldfish has a 3 second memory.
If they see people, they know its food time.
When they are going through the gravel...wouldnt they stop after 3 seconds, forgetting they were just fed so there might be some in the gravel?? Like once mine dont see any food in the air, they search through the gravel, but after 3 seconds, they would stop searching and start swimming again correct?
In a pond, ive seen a goldfish that comes up when a certain person was standing over looking in.
Anybody else have any evidence to go against this 3 second memory? lol
Who knows if its true, but it doesnt seen right to me..

It's crap.
In my old 55g one of my huge Comets would go to a corner of the tank and about 1/2" under the surface would pop suck at the corner. This noise could be heard throughout the house. He would do it whenever he was hungry - day or night. This annoying habit went on for years.

They're actually smarter than they look.

it's all baloney.

it comes from the idea that goldfish are stupid.. which i do agree with. but even stupid people can remember things.
it also comes from the fact that they swim around in circles and look equally excited every timepass something they .. well they're wiggly fish with big eyes.. they always look excited. and they swim around in circles cuz they live in a glass box.

anyways, my fish know the difference between me and my boyfriend.. i'm the meal ticket, and he's not. they get ultra wiggly and swim to the top of the tank when i walk up. they just do their own thing when he walks up.

I don't believe this at all. I saw a video where a Japanese guy apparently trained 4 goldfishes to do some synchornized swimming. I'll try to llook for the video. Plus we have a local guy who makes his goldfish swim through hoops upon command. Well there could be a trick but.. they do recognize you as the food giver right? :grinyes:

Ive heard the video is from magnets...they feed the goldfish magnets, and as he moves his hand around, he has another magnet under his palm that makes them swim in sync...but who knows, but they do know when im going to feed them they go nuts lol

Goldfish are smart. The 3 second memory is nonsense.

Well if they only have a 3 second memory why do my shibunkins know the difference between me coming to feed them and a kookaburra sitting on the side of the pond waiting for a feed. When I feed they all come to the surface when the kookaburra sits their they scoot to the bottom of the pond.

Cheers

The 3 second memory really sounded unreasonable in the first place, even before I had goldfish.

My goldies only recognize me and my sister as their feeders. Anybody else gets completely ignored.

I dont think goldfish are really that stupid.... not the smartest fish there are, but definetly smart for a cyprinid. theres a reason they're such successful invaders, and smarts is one of them.

Click the button below to check out a smart trained goldfish named Albert. The 3 second memory idea couldn't be anymore false.

Was watching my comets earlier and noticed how they will hit on a piece of crap over and over and over again until it gets sucked into the filter intake. Inhale it, spit it out, swim around the tank, see it again, suck it up, spit it out, swim around the tank ... see it again, suck it up, spit it out ... it must have taken them 3 seconds to swim around the tank, forget they had already hit on the crap and then hit again thinking it was a treat! LOL!

My goldfish come to the front of the tank when I'm around because they know I'm the bringer of food. They hide when my mum is there because one of the first things she did with the tank is to tap on the side continuously for some mad reason! They can tell us apart so they're certainly not dumb

I've never understood why loads of people would say that. Goldfish have a three second memory. I don't believe it. I just always that if any person believed that, that they were just talking out of their ***. LOL.

Completely false. I like how Mythbusters busted it, even though I never saw the episode.

Most goldfish test their crap for being food, and go over the same peices quite constantly. They don't name their feces, it's not like they recognise different ones.

If they had a memory they wouldn't keep hitting the SAME piece of crap over and over and over again. But I guess Im talking out of my *** for posting my accurate truthful observations, yep lmao!
