Hi, i just changed my substate to play sand. Though i washed it well but when i added water was still very dirty. Will it settle and clear, or do i have to keep changing water?

when you do water changes, put a bowl or a flat plate onto the bottom of the tank and pour new water onto that item. it will help to keep the sand from getting stirred up again and clouding the water in the future.

Not all play sands are equal.
Monitor your pH.

put a sponge ove the intake of the filter to keep sand grains from getting into the impeller

when you mix it up it might cloud back up... sponge of the intake is a must.

I use play sand in my 75 gallon heavily planted, once the sand settled it was never a problem again. I use 2 Magnum 350 cannister filters and just cut the intake so it was up towards the top of the tank. I haven't had any problems with sand in the impeller.

I noticed in squakbert's reply he (or she) said to monitor the ph. Will play sand raise the ph on it's own? Also i've read that slate or granite will raise ph. Will most rocks or other types also raise the ph?

How would one fasten the sponge to the intake? Rubberband? Would that be bad for the tank parameters?
