I had just set up a 29 gallon FOWLR tank (eventually reef), and its cycling right now. Anyways I had question about what different types of algae phases/stages I will be going through. So...

1. What are the phases/stages?

2. Roughly how long will these last?

3. If a phase/stage gets out of control, how do I treat them?

It really depends on:

your water parameters
your flow
how much you feed
what livestock is in there to control it
whether something is introduced via liverock or a frag

Expect diatoms towards the end of your cycle. They might last 10 days, maybe more. You can add snails to eat some of them once the tank is cycled but they will also go away with time. Other than that need to make recommendations based on what you run across.
