i've heard both sides of this argument, so i just wanted to see which side wins on the AC board: in your opinions and experiences, is stress coat good to use or dangerous?

Is the winning side, then, correct?

"Good" and "Bad" aren't always very useful categories: witness the folks who gabble about "bad" bacteria" or "nasties" hidden in driftwood...

What does Stress Coat contain?

What does stress coat actually do?

What is the 'stress" being referred to in "Stress Coat?" Is it just a euphemism for "Aquarist's Anxiety?"

Let us address these genuine questions. Voting! Voting is what Kansas Boards of Education do about popular fears of evolution. Or what Supreme Courts do to justify flawed elections.

i use a dab during water changes it because it dechlorinates. don't know if it does more than that really. i guess it makes me feel better about a new fish's chance for survival...it sounds nice.

i use it as dechlorinator.

it's simple and easy to use, 1 squirt per gallon. i bought a pump bottle originally and now i bought a gallon from bigals and just refill it as needed.......

as far as the extra stuff in it, you may not need it, but i have noticed no ill effects because of it.

Good to use or dangerous?....hmm...well, I wouldn't say it was "dangerous", but I think it is "OK" to use...how "good" it actually is, I don't know. It does, however, neutralize chlorine fairly well...and "may" benefit fish who have had their natural slime coat removed from too much handling, or from a fall on to the floor after a death defying leap from the tank. But I wouldn't say that the "extra slime protection" is always "necessary" either.;) But the use of it at every water change shouldn't really harm anything...what are we talking about here? Once every 1-2 weeks at the most?

My rule of thumb: if you use something and don't have problems with fish loss, then it works. If you use it and you DO have fish loss, then use something else. People tell me everyday that all they have ever used is Stress Coat. Around here, we need to use a multi-conditioner, one that removes ammonia, chlorine, chloramine, nitrites.....We use a lot of Prime and the Hagen water conditioners, just because we've had good luck with them. We've used everything over the last 10 years.

This cracked me up! LOL!

Anyhow, never used the stuff, so couldn't say.

It removes chlorine and neutralizes chloramine.

I use it for that...I don't really measure though, more or less just squirt it in as I am filling up the tank.

Hey WetmanNY - greetings from the side of the pond where any legislative proposal to push good science (evolution) out of the curriculum wouldn't even pass the laugh test...

:D

I use it to remove chlorine and have no ill-side effects...I think.

When using it in my Q-tank and I'm doing 50% changes a day, I noticed a clear slimy coating on the glass (aloe?) but the fish never seemed bothered by it.

Faramir - Good to see you back! Would have said so sooner but I do enough non-sensical typing so I try to tie it in with pertinent typing. Trying to stay on the "good" side of the mods!

I know, "Good" and "Bad" aern't useful...

And what do "mods" actually do ?:p

i have that 1 drop per gallon stuff too, i keep it in case i run out of everything else. but considering most of my water changes are done with a 3 1/2 gallon bucket. this just makes sense. :)
