Carbon and Plant Ferts

I agree. The amount of chemicals carbon removes from the water column in terms of ferts is negligible. In fact, you typically don't even need to run carbon if your tank is well planted. Also, if you using it to "clarify" water, you might want to try a product called Seachem Purigen. It gives a good shine, and polish to the water without any effects on fertilizer nutrient removal.

I run carbon in all and recommend against Purigen.

I feel it limits natural development of the bacteria colony size.

Purigen doesn't directly remove ammonia, nitrites or nitrates...it just removes the organic compounds that lead to the production of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates. It has no direct effect on bacterial colonies, themselves....no more so than a water change or use of carbon will have on bacterial colonies through the removal of DOCs.

isnt purigen just a floculation compound? when added, it causes DOCs and the like to clump together and fall to the bottom, or be picked up by the filter.

yes? no?
