just their way of showing aggression and territory. mine will flare at me when i come up to the tank and then be all nice and flirty when he realizes its food time.
It means he's REALLY MAD! They have attitude! Mine does it to me all the time. He kind of shutters as he comes near me too as he flares. He thinks he's a tough guy!
