Could debris on the bottom of the tank cause nitrates to be way high? I have tons of debris on the bottom of my sump and I think that's the reason that my nitrates have sky rocketed!!! Could that be the reason and should I clean that up? thanks

i don't know...

i didn't scrub my lr when i got it so i am kind of upset with myself because i have all sorts of crap on the sand... but hopefully its not bad..

how high are your nitrates?

same here, ive been useing my net and cleaning it all out...

yes, that is deitrus, your flow should be strong enough, and your CUC burl enought to not allow it to settle.

those are millions of lil NO2 babies

could be other factors. try to clean it up and see if it'll make a difference. if not, let us know more about your set up to see where the problem comes from. i have high nitrates due to overstocking, i can't catch my big blenny to move her to another tank, so i just closed my eyes on my high nitrates. my blenny is so bad that she digs her way under the rocks when i'm after her and i don't want to move stuff.

My nitrates are high, but I think it is due to overfeeding. You may try feeding a little less, and see if that lowers it. I tend to over feed because my clown is agressive during feeding time, and my goby and dottyback tend to not get to eat, if I only feed a little.

Your CUC (clean up crew) is a factor as well. a few more hermits, maybe a shrimp, and a couple nerites should aid the process of waste removal.

You can also add a power head to stir it up in the water column,it will cloud your tank for a few,but your filter system should clear it up pretty fast. You ideally dont want anything left to settle on your substrate, you might need to up your clean up crew a bit like bgb suggested.More flow will help too

Agreed...I've had luck with brittle stars as well as well as various univalves.

What kind of substrate is in the tank? You could also have detrius building up underneath the substrate if you're using crushed coral versus aragonite. It's much easier to just gravel vac the surface of the substrate after feedings than having to disturb the whole tank to get underneath everything.
