Hi everyone, I usually hang out on the FW forums, but I've been wanting to get into SW. I think I may have found my opportunity, although I'm a bit hesitant and would like your advice.

A local auction/classifieds website has a posting offering the following:
-38 Tall with Stand
-2x96 Aqua Lights
-Backpack 100 Skimmer
-Emperor 400 Filter w/ Extra Replacement Cartridges
- 3 1200 Power Heads with Tidal Wave Timer
-Mushroom Covered Live Rock
-2 8" Umbrella Leathers
-Tank being Sold Complete with Chemicals, Media, tons of extra stuff.

The asking price for all of this is $450. However, the post says "it must go" because they are moving, so I feel that I may be able to haggle a bit (I hope, because I can't quite spend that much right now).

I want to have a refugium (eventually), so a large part of the deal depends on whether or not I can fit another tank in the stand. I haven't seen it yet, so I don't know how much live rock is in the tank (another important pricing factor). I was actually thinking about getting a smaller tank (because of cost issues), but this would be a great size, I think.

And of course, the allure of not having to go through the long process of initially establishing a tank is very much a plus. (There would be many adjustments, of course. I'm looking forward to taking things slow and building a habitat step by step. But it seems like this would be a jump start!)

What are your opinions? I realize that without pictures, etc. it's hard to judge. But I just thought I'd see if anyone had any thoughts, especially since you folk are probably much more in tune with pricing of equipment, etc.

TIA

That is a borderline deal in my opinion. Those lights will be fine for the sofites listed but not anything that demands more light. Not familiar with that skimmer and the powerheads are probably MaxiJets. For me it would depend on how nice the stand is and how much live rock.

Yeah, stands can vary so much in quality.

The live rock is definitely a big question mark. Having some well-established LR would be great, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay for this, then have to go buy another 20 pounds or something (especially with LR priced $10/lb at my local store...though I have read several threads on good places to order from online).

Since it is a full system which has been running, it has the great benefit of being able to set it up in my apartment and run it right away. I can always make adjustments and upgrades after that.

I tried searching for the skimmer, but couldn't find that brand name. I'll have to see what the real brand name is when I see the tank.

Left a message with the seller to set up an appointment to view it. We'll see what happens!
