Excuse me for being plant-ignorant. I just got my first non-plastic plant today and I am pumped!:)

I got some jungle val. and I was wondering how to plant them. I have pool filter sand so should I keep the pot on or take it off?

Take it out of the pot and get as much of the rockwool as possible out of the roots. I usually trim my roots to about a 2-3 inch length at that time.

Then I place my finger over the roots and push them into the sand as far as possible. Then gently pull it back up until the crown of the plant is above the sand.

The crown is the point that the roots and leaves meet.

I agree with what Ice said. Here's a link to a favorite plant info site of mine and the page on jungle val.

Oh and Welcome to the wonderful world of live plants. Not sure if jungle val is easy to keep, but some other plants that I recommend for starters and that are low maintenance are anubias, java fern, and watersprite. They are also considered low light plants.

Well, I wanted something that looked more natural and could handle high pH in a lake tang. tank and a lot of sites recommend vallisneria...I don't know, we'll see how this works out for me. I would love to change to live plants in my 30, but I don't really have the time or money right now...
