Can a severum and 1 convict cichlid get along in a 55gal.? And if so should they be added at the same time?

They should be fine.

Cool, will they get along with other fish too (red eyes, buenos aires tetra, etc.)?

And should I add both the severum and convict at the same time?

Should the convict be a male or female and could I add another convict of the opposite sex later or would it be killed?

Some dithers would be good like some danios. They should be added at the same time and be the same sex to prevent hybrids. :)

The severum and cichlid should be the same sex? And the danios won't become lunch?

The danios will be dithers (target fish) to keep aggression levels down. Convicts and Serverums are cichlids. If they are male and female they could breed. You do not want this to happen.

I knew they were both cichlids but I didn't know the could interbreed, I figured only severums could breed with severums and convicts with convicts.

Are the females the more colorful ones?

And also aren't the females the more agressive ones that might cause trouble in the tank?

If i'm getting only one severum I want to get a colorful one, and the convicts that have a blue/green tint to them look nice.

So the danios would be meant to hunt down? If so I don't think I'll waste my $$ on the danios I'll just keep the cichlids with some big tetra.

The female cons are going to be more colorful. Serverums are the same between male and female. The males are going to be more aggressive. You could do honduran redpoints. The are a lot like cons but a lot more colorful.

I thought either the male or female severum had a more distinct color pattern on their face kinda like veins?

Hmmm those are pretty, and look like cons like you said and I just read they aren't as aggressive in a community setting, so I'll have a look at the LFS and see if they have them i'm kind of doubting they will though, convicts are more common at the LFS i think.

I doubt the sev and con will cross breed.

So it won't matter if I end up getting male/female, both male, or both female...cause I'm not sure that in the store tank I'm really going to be able to tell and its kind of hard to tell the LFS guy which exact fish you want when all the fish i the tank look almost exactly alike haha.

Ok so I should add those both at the same time but what about other fish (tetra) should they all be added beforehand or could I add to a school of tetra later on after putting the severum and/or convict in the tank?

And should I definitely just go with one con and not a pair since there will be other fish around?

If I was setting it up, I'd add the dithers first and let them get their territories set up. Then add similar sized sev and con at the same time.

The dithers are dithers. They dont need territories.

Serverums and cons can breed.

I never stated that they couldn't, I stated that doubt they will.

Well, actually they will establish thenselves in the tank, and become accustomed to it. When the others are added, they will stay in their natural level.

By the way, folks may have cotradicting opinions and not agree with you. It is okay for us to not share your opinion.

I have a gold severum and a convict in together and it works out well. The Severum is larger and keeps the convict in check. Chases him once in awhile but nothing major. They did get into a fight when the severum entered his cave but again it didnt last. If you want beautiful severums and have the $$$ check out tangled up in cichlids on the web.

my question is, how to tell the sex of either fish? babies are hard to tell apart, and who sells full blown adults? If I could have found a male fire mouth for my female I would have . Oh and she does not have the female look. she has long fins, elongated face. I was told she was a male, many times. guess what? she laid eggs, 3 times now.
I say both fish will do well together.
