I found a few of these at a park pond, they were living in horrble water, it smelled REALLLY bad, there is trash everywhere in this pond area.
And it seems like people have been releasing lots of fish, I counted about 50 comet goldfish and something(the water is really murky) that looked to be a giant pleco. about 70 geese and ducks stay at this place for most of the year, so no wonder the water is nasty..
anyway, I brought them home.. It took all of my will power not to take a few dozen mosquito fish with me :D
This is the smallest of them, at about 2" from tip to foot.
I think they look like japenese trapdoors.

Also, around the ends of their shells are like paper, how can I help them with that? What are some high calcium foods to give them?

try placing cuttlebone in the tank..... not sure of the species though sounds like a crappy place you got them from. How unfortunately sad.

float a cuttle fish (bone) in ur tank thats pure calcium and good for the shells of the snails and shrimps if you have any.

They look like Japanese Trapdoors to me. Use a cuttlebone to strength up their shell. Go the the birds section in the pet stores.

The entire park is trashy, if I still lived there(it's in richmond, Va) I'd clean out their ponds at least. It could be beautiful place if people could just walk to extra 20 feet and put the trash in the trash cans they have all of the park. over one waterfall there is enough trash to fill 3-4 cans, it's pretty sad, and whoever manages the park isn't doing a very good job.. or they'd at least try to remove the loose dogs(people dump them there all the time :( ) and fix the chain that's keeping people from falling over a rocky 60-70' drop off of a waterfall, the chain is about 2ft off the ground.

Will cuttle-bone harm anything in my tank? plants/fish Ect.?
how much bone do I use for my pond? it's a 700-720 gallon?
I also have some in my 55g, so how much bone for that?

Thanks everyone :)

no it wont harm anything in your tank, you can just float it in your pond and you cant overdose with it so as much as you like.
