Got these pics lastnight, when I noticed this odd stuff in my tank.

First up, the leaf on my sword.... why is it coloured like that? is this a defficency of some kind? can it be cured or prevented from happening to the rest of the plant?

Secondly, what is this stuff growing all over my tank, You can see it on the glass as the little flecks of white stuff, and up close it looks like a tiny tiny tiny string, that connects a "V" shaped piece of fuzz to stuff.

Its all over my plants and glass, and just blows around with the current(but remains stuck to whatever its growing on)

I know the pics are hard to see, but its even harder to get pictures of something thats less then 1/4", growing on a clear pane of glass.... it doesnt appear to be living creature... I would guess an algae of some kind.
its a little hard to see on the leaf of the sword, but i think its visible enough.

I did add more fish food to the filter for ammonia purposes.... but there are no ammonia readings in my tank... again im going to assume its because the plants are using what little ammo was available from the rotting food?

Don't know about the sword, but the fuzzy white things are probably hydroids.

Im not too sure about either of them.. About 6 years ago when I had a 20gal I had a few plants in there and had the same stuff develope on my glass... Let me just tell you that nothing good came of it, and no, it didn't go away on its own... I tried describing it to many people, but no one could identify it. Hopefully you will have better luck.. and let me just tell you... IT SPREADS LIKE WILDFIRE! Eventually it grew all over everthing in the tank, and I had to shut the tank down. Hopefully this dosn't happen to you..... I wish you luck, and if you find out what it is... Im really interested in knowing... ;)

Have you tried cleaning the glass, to see if it will come off? Other than the fact that it looks white-ish here, it resembles algae that I get on my glass and sometimes leaves.

I havent tried cleaning the grass, but it doesnt seem like a lifeform thats anything other than a plant, such as an algae, it doesnt seem to exhibit any type of creature like motions.... just stuck to glass blowing around in the current. im sure it will wipe off.

well these flecks of things wipe off easily enough, except on the plants, I cant really push on the plants enough to cause them all to come off.

my plants dont look so well, a couple of them anyway... Id really like to know whats going on. :(

Yea, they do wipe of pretty easily, as my past experience has shown me... But for me, they would return twice as fast the more i would wipe them off....
I hope you figure out whats going on and get things under control....
Keep us posted...

Hmmm, I have the same things on my glass, they just wipe away but I always did wonder what it was!

As for the Sword plant, (correct me if I'm wrong) the new leaves on my various wide leaf sword plants are always a reddish color, and they slowly turn to a nice green as each leaf matures. This is not the case for the narrow leaf sword plants in my tanks, just the ones that have wider leaves. HTH, Michelle

shag: the new leaves ive seen on the sword all seem to be green, only this one is red so far. it almost seems to be dying.... maybe the plants are eating themselves due to a lack of nutrients of some kind?

the iron reading comes up low.... as in 0.... and ive been feeding the plants sparsly with BA's plant food about 2x a week, and some flora24 at random.

as for this stuff on my glass, i dunno.... when i had my fish in my 50gal, this didnt happen... only seems to show up in this tank with the addition of plants.
perhaps my lights have been on too long, as they have been running for a good 18+ hours.

I have started turning them on/off for about 12 hours each day now... i still need to buy a bloody timer.
