Mom's Mini Pond is chugging along great, the 6 white clouds and 5 platy fry are looking GREAT..now we have two problems stemming from the same issue, I'm willing to bet.

The little pond gets FULL HOT SUN from late morning to early afternoon. We have a full on algae bloom going right now, hair algae all over the plants and green water. The fish seem to be loving it, but it's not pretty. Short of getting a UV sterilizer, what can we do?

Mom got some water hyacinth for the pond and it's not doing well..looks very brown and melty and I suspect the little pond is just too hot and bright for it. Any suggestions for floating, ideally flowering plants that might work instead?

Two solutions:

a) since you state it is a small pond, go to Home Depot/Amazon or whatever store you have nearby and buy a patio umbrella:

This will add important shade which will reduce the algae.

b) Water Hyacinth is fine but what you need is to get at least a 1/3 of the water surface covered. Water lillies do a good job but are expensive. There are many other cheaper plants that your local pond store should have available.

But the key to fighting algae in ponds is based on 3 factors: shade, plants and UV.

Not sure where you're at, but if you have petsmart around you they have clearanced their water lillies - around $3 each.
