I just found out that my bucket I use for water changes on my fish tank at work is currently being used to hold a box turtle one of my co-workers found out near the street in front of our offices. While I applaud the attempt to save the turtles life, I am not so happy about my water change bucket being used, especially after the turtle decided decorate the bottom of the bucket with its excrement. The people who used my bucket are planning on releasing it away from civilization in a forest near a pond, though one person was talking of keeping it as a pet.

My question is, what should I do with my bucket. I tried to wipe as much feces up as I could with a paper towel, but it will probably take more then just water to clean it up. I don’t want my co-workers desire to save a turtle, no matter how noble, to endanger my aquarium. What would be the best way to clean up this bucket, or should I buy another bucket, and only use the contaminated bucket for pulling out dirty water (and make the new bucket a new water only bucket.)

Thanks...

Xeider

I'd just buy a new bucket for $3 ;)

Poor ol' turtle. Came out for a mating romp on Turtle Day and look what happened. Have you ever noticed that you only see box turtles on your local Turtle Day-- and then they're everywhere!

I hope they set it free where loose dogs won't kill it or eat the eggs.

A good scrub, then a mix of 50-50 Clorox and water left overnight should have the bucket sterilized.

I have a box turtle and use the same bucket i use for water chagnes to soak him in. I've been doing it for over year and never had a problem(yes he has even gone to the bathroom in it with no problems).

Just rinse it out or even use bleach. Its not like the poop should have soak into the plastic:D just clean and use.

make sure your friends release the box turtle ASAP, they can get very sick from being in capivity even if it is just a short periode of time.Plus if he is living in a bucket where there is enough poop to worry you, I would get him a new bucket untill he is released.
