I was interested in setting up a tank with a Jack Dempsey, a Texas, a GT and a Red Devil. Any suggestions on what size tank would be suffiecient for them? Filtration suggestions? This is what I would eventually like to have and I am trying to plan ahead.

big

just bc of the red devil really. they are extremely mean, and they will probably try to kill the other fish no matter what. i have only seen one person keep a red devil with anything, and that is the predatory cichlid dude on here. he could probably give you the most help

the other 3 could probably go in a 75

all things will be taken into consderation, I would more than willing to replace the red devil with something more attractive that could hold its own, maybe a pair of convicts or an oscar? I really want to try and keep it down to about a 125gal at the most.

Your are never going to keep a Red Devil into adulthood with those other fish in a 125 or smaller, IMO.

An Oscar is also not the cichlid to keep with a Texas and a GT. Oscars are big pushovers.

I think the GT, JD and Texas are plenty in a 125. Drop that down to a 90, and I would lose the Texas. In either situation, a stout Convict will probably make do, provided it has good cover available in the tank.

Thank you for your advice,

what about bottom feeders, I currently have a pimodellus pictus and a striped raphael. I know the raphael would do ok, what about the pictus? Would it do better if I had about three or four, or should I just leave them in the tank they are in.

...No problem...

I'm not one to ask about catfish. I never had much luck mixing cats with CA cichlids. SA cichlids are easier going with bottom feeders. Most CA cichlids look at these guys as something to aspire swallowing (and they usually are successful).

If you are purchasing the cichlids as juvi's, try the cats but watch as the cichlids grow. This is the best way to approach a cichlid community tank anyway. Otherwise, plecos are always a safe bet, but buy them at least TWICE the size as your biggest cichlid. They grow much slower....

i would go with the gt, jd, texas, and a convict in a 125

what about a salvini? from what i have been told they could hold there own. maybe a gt, jd, texas, and a salvini.

I have been more and more interested in salvini's the more I read about them, but I have not seen any available at my lfs course I can still look around. Do Salvini's only aquire the vibrant coloring when they are breeding? I have seen several pics, some with red bellies and blue highlights and others that are just yellow with black striping.

All fish have more vibrant color when breeding. My prediction for a 125 with a GT Texas and JD. JD gets to be four or five inches and stakes out a corner cave he never leaves and the GT and Texas take over the rest of the tank. I think it would honestly be a pretty peaceful mix. If you add a salvini or convict those fish can be rabalrousers and stir up all kinds of trouble.
