Could this be a non-dominate male Kenyi?

So I stocked my Mbuna tank this weekend. I have five each of Electric Yellow, Acei, and Kenyi. I tried for 1 male, and 4 female of each. So far so good. Everyone seems to be at peace for now.

I'm starting to wonder about one of my "female" Kenyi. It's not as blue as the other three females. It is the largest of the four. The male is clearly the yellow dominate male. I'm wondering if you all think that my large female could be a male in disguise. She does run off other fish more than the others and has some yellow in it's top fin area.

Wanted to post and see what you all think.

Here are two pictures. The first is the suspected fish, the second is one of the typical females.

Could be. Definitely looks like it's more yellow/less blue than the second female picture. I guess if you're really concerned about it you can always take it back and get another one. The Kenyi can be a handfull as far as temperment is concerned. No need to take a risk. If you aren't happy then just return.

from what ive read the dominant female often takes on the male coloration when shes ready to breed.lets hope its a breeding issue then u wont have to get rid of her/him!!!hope it works out for u

Not true that breedeing females get male coloration. It is def. a less dominant male.

they are all female, then some become male,,,,the more dominant ones. this one looks like a female to me so far.

It's been a few weeks now since i've had the tank up and running. It's been one disaster after another. First it was high Nitrates because of my own stupidity. I'm in my 7th day of Ich treatments from my Petsmart purchased Acei's.

Now, for the Kenyi, I'm about 100% sure that I have three males and two females. The one pictured above is probably 75% yellow now. He has his cave that he chases fish from, the original yellow who's 100% yellow has his cave he keeps. The third male is probably 45% yellow how. Of course, they are the largest fish in the tank.

The LFS won't take them back or exchange. If it starts to be an issue I'm going to try to give them away or just flush them.

This whole "keeping fish as a peaceful hobby" is crap. I'm going back to breaking golf clubs.

Certainly if u can't give them away a local fish store ( not a petsmart or petco) will take it for free. Sometimes stores will give you up to 1/3 or so in $ for what they sell them for. Or they may give u alittle store credit. I't may not be whorth the drive in $, but u will be saving a fish.
