I got these at the LFS and it said it was polkadots synodontis, and they were only $4.99 so I bought 3 after making sure the clerk told me they were compatible with cichlids and wouldn't become too big for my 55G tank.

The problem is, I see polkadots advertised as $49+ on the web, so I'm sure they made an error and it's not polkadots.

They're very quick and hard to see, they always hide and come out when I feed or when there's no one in the room, as soon as they see someone they flee and hide.

There you go:

"Common" names are always such a pain. The "Polkadots" you've seen advertised are probably Synodontis angelicus which always command a high price.

it kind of looks like a hybrid to me as well. But its hard to tell from the pics. I bought a "synodontis" catfish one time. It was about 1" to 1.5" and as it turns out it was my asian upsidedown catfish, not even the same family or continent. So careful with the common names
