I wouldn't put GBR's in with sharks. Once they get older, sharks get way too aggressive for rams, which are kind of delilicate.

It's hit or miss with the RTS. Problem is. when you miss the RTS will get REAL nasty to the GBR.
Never had experience with a tricolor.
What else is in the tank now? or do you plan on adding?

Yikes! Just found out that tricolor is another name for bala! Balas get way too big for 55 gallons (up to 16") and need to be in fairly good sized groups to be confortable. Skip the "tricolors" all together!

if you decide on GBR's look for a local source if you can,
if not look for a reputable breeder.
stay away from rams that come from asia..they have a tendency to pump them full of hormones causing the rams to colorup but create health issues.

you could urn that 55 in to a good sa tank.
gbrs, angels, festivum, keyholes , discus to name a few cichlids to choose from.
bn's corys for bottom dwellers.

I agree. The owner of the fish shop where I got my GBR's only gets them from Europe. He said that he had major problems a few years ago with the ones from Asia.

I asked this question on the Chichlid forum and didn't get a response - would GBRs work in the same tank with Tiger Barbs?

As long as the tiger barbs are ignoring the rams, they should be okay.

We were at our local fish store today and i asked that very question, he said no problem .he also went on to say that if there was 1 male and 3 females, the other females would be harassed, and recommend only 1 male and 1 female, even if there were say 3 males and 3 females, Hummm.....:)

Well the only time the extra females would be harassed is when the pair is breeding...

agree
generally it's 1 male 2 females. if the tank is large enough( 55 is fine) the lone female can find a place to hang.
rams can spawn qwith different females..the pair binding is not as strong as in angels or discus.
I kept tiger barbs with my bolivians...I discovered to not worry about the rams..it was the tiger barbs I had to worry about.. my male bolivian during spawning would lay in wait..when the tigerbarb got too close..he would slam him from below sending the barb into the glass top.
:jaw:
I gave the barbs away.
