I'm interested in purchasing this tank and I asked what type of filter he had, I don't think I've ever heard of this filter it is called a penguin wheel filter and I don't know anything about this filter and was wondering if anybody on here has had experience with that brand and is it anygood?

I'd really like to get this tank it's a 33 gal it comes with stand filter, heater etc for 125, the only problem is he'll drop the tank off and stuff but I have to go his house and pay and then he'll drop it off at my house which sounds a little suspcious but will talk to this guy some more.

anyways thanks!

penguin bio wheels are quite common, theyre good as far as ive heard , but ive never used them, i only use aquaclears

I was just wondering if they were cheap to maintain. I only have to spend about 6 dollars a month on my filter which is an Aqua Clear. I buy the ammonia and the... I forget what the grey one does and I seem to always have an extra supply of the sponges but when I do run out of sponges then it's like 9 dollars a month.

Don't waste your money each month buying new filters.... just take the old ones out and rinse them in a bucket of tank water when you do a water change. Swish it around a few times to get most of the gunk off and then put it back in.

You should only really need to replace the filter cartridge if it is starting to get really frayed and or falling apart.

oh really southpaw I never knew that! It says on the boxes to replace every month. I tend to replace them every month and half. The sponges I keep longer because they just need to be rinsed out really well and I replace sponges every four 4 months. Thanks for the tip

Umm, wring out the sponge in a bucket of tank water when you do your water change. They should last years and years without needing to be replaced. Don't get the other stuff for the filter, you don't need it. I run Aquaclears exclusively and only use the sponges with them. I have done so for over 10 years. The other stuff is a waste of money. You should not have to spend anything on your tank other than food and water conditioner (Prime) and meds when you need them.

I have a penguin 150 filter on my 27 gallon. It's fine for a filter (better than the top-fin filter that came with my tank).

And as said above, you don't have to replace the filter media as often as the box says. Just rinse it in dechlorinated water, or tank water from a WC, every week or two. Then you only need to replace it once the filter media starts falling apart.

If you do change the filter media as often as suggested on the box, it'll probably cost you around 6-8 dollars a month.

Yah, just use your own filtration media. Penguin filters work just fine, the bio wheel can be a little tricky to set in them, but easy otherwise. I've used them up to the 330 size, then they go to emperor 400's. Good filters IMO.

Thanks everybody! I never knew that before, lol and I felt guilty for not changing them regulary! Good news then, I havn't really looked at other filters before because Aqua Clear came with my tank, so wasn't really sure about penguin and I am glad to hear good things about it then! Well glad to know then!

One question about the filter thingy, so if I don't need the other two things in my filter should I add two more sponges to it then?
