About 4 months ago I purchased a small blue mystery snail from the lfs. It has grown now to about an inch in diameter and is always active. I come in my room today from school and its floating at the water surface with part of its body hanging out of the shell. Now about 7 hours after I first seen it floating there is a clearish type stuff hanging off of it. I took it out and disposed of it. I am just wondering why all of a sudden it died. The tank is a 20 gallon high with barbs. I do not know the tank specs though.
Get a liquid test kit and determine the water parameters.

If you've used fish meds or fertilizers recently they may also have caused the snail to die. Inverts are extremely sensitive to metals.

I haven't used any meds or fertilizers in the tank. All the fish seem perfectly fine. I will look into a test kit. I do not like the local fish store too much so I will have to order online.

Not all of them, but I agree most of them are. It pays to take everything they say with a grain of salt and do your own research as well.
I agree, get as many test kits as you can asap. ("master test kit" packs are a great value). Make sure you at least have pH, KH, and GH. Nitrate is handy to have too, as is anything else you can afford. In the mean time, before your tests arrive, take some tank water to the best lfs around and have them test it for everything. They should do it for free.
I've found in my own experience, it's always better to have test kits BEFORE something goes wrong... then when it does go wrong, you can compare test results, instead of guessing at what could have changed how. :duh:
