This English soccer player is a superstar in Europe, he recently joined LA Galalxy (i think thats the name)
Just wondering what impact he's had over your side of the pond?
Have you even heard of him?
(He's pals with Tom Cruise and lives next to him in LA)

'dont care for soccer'
this always surprises me over here....soccer is huge in the rest of the world....south america has some of the best teams on the planet...Brazil (and the famous Pele, best player the world ever seen), Argentina (and Maradona, second bst player world ever seen).
Niko might blast me for the Maradona one...but you simply cannot forget that wrld cup goal he scored where he single handedly beat nealry the entire team to score...who did he score that against again Niko???
And there was the infamous 'el mano del dio' go again, the most favourite goal of every scotish soccer fan.....:naughty:

lol In Canada and American people tend to be more geared towards Football, Baseball and hockey..
In Canada it tends to be more Hockey I mean for goodness sakes Canadians are crazy for hockey they will skip work to watch a big game, like when the Jr Championship games begin on Boxing Day(Dec 26) usually when Canada are in the finals people take work off and head off to the bars to watch, same with playoffs! You scottish guys sound as crazy as we do, but just with Hockey.
Soccer isn't really big here, people are excited that Beckham is coming to Vancouver to play but he might because apparently he injured himself or something. Football is pretty big, well since our Lions won the Grey Cup.

He came to LA with an injured ankle, then played for a little while, then he's out again with a sprained knee. He's still good but his team ain't doing very well. He even scored 3 goals in 1 of their games but his team still went on to lose 5-4. The fans are starting to complain but LA Galaxy isn't since ticket and jersey sales are up.
I think he's fatigued right now. He was playing in europe and america (travelling back and forth) before his injury. Is he some sort of an icon in europe?

LMAO.....awwww Nick, you had to say it did'nt you?......
As much as it pains me to say it, i do agree there mate, besides the cheating goal (grrrrrr), the one where he single handedly (ohh...a hand reference) ran rings round us was special, very special... For anybody who is not British and who would like to refresh their memories, he is a "intuitive" video clip..Ya gotta hand ( doh, again ) to the guy...

I hate the commercials they keep playing here!! Here comes Beckham to teach us backwards Americans how to play soccer. It's embarassing.
Soccer is still a secondary sport in the US like baseball and basketball. Football and Hockey rule!
Oh and then there's NASCAR in between.
Soccer is a great game and fun to play and watch but it just isn't catching on to well in the pro game market. It's a popular school game from grade school up through high school but just can't seem to draw enough interest for people to spend the big bucks to go and watch. I know lot's of people who watch the game on TV though.

1-Some Fun Facts here I did not know:I have heard that Texas has THE best pro state soccer team in the US.
2-Perhaps it is because soccer isn't so popular in the US, that their national team always make a fool out of themselves in the World Cup. Like last World Cup, they made so many commercial and ads before the cup to get people fired up, but lost in the Cup. There just isn't enough support.
3-I actually respect all the sports that are popular here in the US (baseball, basketball, football...etc) They all require talent and very hard work.
4- Maradona was a really good player and a bullet. One thing I don't like about him is the image he posed to people/fans with drug use and the fat shape he is in now after retirement.
5-As a Brazilian, I do admit that soccer in Brazil isn't just soccer. It isn't just a sport to make money, soccer, my friend, is a religion of a religion. Anywhere you go, big cities or country side, you will see people playing it. I'll give you an example, when I was there, I was in High School, there was this indoor soccer field that was perhaps half the size of the school itself, I guess that's how important it is.
Not to brag, but Pele was really the best player in the world, an he is still in good shape. He has some organizations that help out kids and even develop/train them to play pro soccer.
And we still have one of the best players in the world: Ronaldinho. The guy is a god when it comes to handling a ball. Amazing at what he does.
There are many more rising stars in the game: Kaka (played in the World Cup), Adriano (also played), Vagner Love (yes that is his last name; plays in Europe somewhere) and Rubinho.
Of course there are many other great players in the world: By Country
Messy- Argentina
Tevez
Zidane Aka Zidane "The HeadButt" lol(retired)

I love Ronaldhino!! Aww he's my fav...
I wish I got to watch more soccer, we dont' have cable and they never air the games around here on local tv. They hardly air them on cable.
Kentucky its
Basketball
Football
Baseball
Soccer's getting a lot more popular though. I have a little bar I go to to watch the tournaments and lately its been packed, for the US games or the finals anyway.

What a way to end a career... almost felt bad for him. :uhoh: Almost. :p:
I like to watch the underdog teams like Ghana, Trinidad/Tobago, I was cheering for Ghana when they played the US in the last World Cup, they were awesome. lol

How is it a mistake? When Pele came, soccer was a rising sport that needed a superstar injection in order to ratchet it up into recognition by an uninterested public. Before Pele there weren't too many soccer programs in high schools across the nation. Now just about every school and community has a soccer program. Now that awareness of the sport and by many, awareness of the players, is in the minds of the US population, the hope of bringing Beckham here is to try to get soccer up in the ranks above curling and tiddley winks.

Hockey beats everything! Hockey is just the best, the atmosphere your in when your team is at home and you go to see a game! It is amazing! Finally the Canucks are ontop of their game, hopefully that continues in the New Season sooon! Soo excited! My favourite part about winter, hockeys back! My fav part of christmas besides presents and stuffing, boxing day the Jr's begin the championships!
Watched the Jr games on tv, and one night we were going over to the Grandparents well it after the game we won and wow the fans were crazier then the canuck fans. That was last year when the games were held in Vancouver!
