My female betta jumped last night. I found her on the floor this morning My daughter and I are heartbroken. She was such a beautiful fish and was doing so well.
My tank has a cover, but there are openings where the heater and filter are.
What is the best way to cover those up so that this doesn't happen again but I can still flip the lid back to perform pwc?
Use some floating plants to discourage bettas from jumping while still retaining the covers.

^^^ That's a great idea Lupin! They even sell fake floating plants if that's more your style ;)
Betta's are jumpers. In fact the entire family is! I've even heard ppl training Bettas to jump from one tank to another...I would need to see a video I think, but anyways, they DO sell fully enclosed 'Hoods'. One such example is the Eclipse Hoods. Search under this, as they make various sizes for standard tanks on the market.

this is just an idea but you could always just lower the water level slightly...

If you have a Wal-Mart near you, they sell them there for $18.98 (at least at my local Wally World) for 10 b.c. thats the one I have.

Thanks for your help. I purchased a new water filter that fits more snugly in the filter hole. I presently have some saran wrap over the hole for the heater until I can think of something more permanent. I'm trying different things out. I'm looking for some floating plants for my aquarium. I also went out and purchased 2 female bettas to replace the one that jumped. My daughter has already named them too.
It was heartbreaking to find our precious Swift on the floor this morning. She was a beautiful fish and she was healthy and getting quite large too. I'm going to miss her and I'm going to do what I can to prevent a repeat of this morning.
