I'm wondering if putting a peice of cuttlebone in a tank for shrimp to eat will leach calcium into the water itself, or not? Will it raise either GH or calcium levels in the water? (my water atm has almost undetectable levels of both, ie under 20mg/l) Thanks!

The cuttlebone slowly breaks down in the water and will disperse calcium into the water.

You do not need to boil it. It sinks like a rock.

Shrimp don't really need calcium, unless your water is extremely soft, but it wont hurt them either. Snails, however, do need some kind of calcium, to ensure that their shell growth is healthy.

Yes, a cuttlebone will leach off calcium into your tank, and possibly raise your PH levels too.

Why is it that you want to add calcium for shrimp? They really don't need it like snails do.
