View Full Version : Nitrites.... whoa.... real or fake?

I just tested my water in my currently fishy/silent cycling tank, and the nitrites were 2.0

for the last couple of weeks, my ammonia readings have been barely 0.25 if that, and they went away with the addition of plants it seemed. so how would there be such a huge nitrite spike with only such a little ammonia previously?

I did dose some ferts just before the test.
3 drops Flora24 @ 1 drop per 12g
25ml FloraGro @ 5ml per 6.5G
10ml BigAls Plant Food supplement @ 5ml per 20G

also, for some reason i dont get an iron reading from my test kit... maybe its bad i dont know. but i figured after those ferts I should have some iron.

Would the addition of those additives be the cause of my sudden nitrite spike?
I didnt test the water yesterday and should have in hindsight.

do I change the water? now? do I let my plants get some of the ferts I added before changing? or is the nitrite spike due to the ferts themselves and I should leave the water alone?

Well ,ive done multiple water changes, 25%, 10%, 50%, and managed to get the nitrites down to 0.25 or below

Ya i will test again later on today, and change if need be.
I might do another small change just to bring the rites down a little further.

since you're using prime, there's a good chance that a large percentage of the nitrites you're seeing in the test have been "deactivated" by the prime. keep up with water changes anyway though.
