My pond is good to go for fish now, so I wanted to get it cycling with a goldfish. Petsmart also had some rosy red minnows. So, I bought 20 minnows and 2 goldfish (one is about 1.5" and the other is about 2"). I think I probably saved them from a short swim in someone's oscar tank.

The goldfish are in a 7'x2'x18" basin after the second water fall, immediately before the actual pond. I put the minnows in the rock-lined basin after the first waterfall, as there's a good bit of current in there.

It was really interesting. When I put the minnows in, they all vanished under rocks. After a while, they started coming out, but started jumping over the falls in with the goldfish, and a few made it into the main pond.

The minnows seem to really like schooling with one of the goldfish. The second goldfish has decided to hide.

Petsmart also had their lillies on clearance, so I bought 3 and dropped them in. Hopefully there is enough growing season left for them to do something.

At this point in the season, I'm wondering if I'll have to wait until spring to get my koi, since I have to wait for the pond to cycle and mature a bit before I start spending big bucks on fish. I have to admit, I'm really apprehensive about the winter months with no feeding, etc. Going through the winter with some goldfish and minnows might get me a bit more comfortable.

Depends on wher you live. I'm In Illinois, where its cold in the winter. I stop feeding my comets and Koi once the water gets below 50 degress. I have'nt had a single death due to the cold. I put a floating heater to keep the ice open. The top 3 inches completely freeze solid except where the heater is this allows gas to escape. I also put a plain air stone (bubber) in just below the heater about half ways down. My ponds are 30" deep.
