My sister has a betta in a nice sized bowl right now, but I'm going to get her a 2.5 gallon for him since I've been looking at him lately and he's gorgeous. Should I just buy the tank? Or the pacages with the filter? He definatly has LONG fins, so wouldnt the filter pull him down? I was thinking no filter but just get an airpump maybe and get a tube and get some bubbles in there for some movement...
she keeps up with daily water changes which is why I'm considering not even getting a filter
any advice?

I would think that a filter wouldn't be necessary if she is doing daily water changes. I successfully kept 2 male bettas in a minibow (with a divider) for a couple years with no filter. As long as she keeps up on water changes to keep the tank clean it should be fine.

i dont think daily water changes would be necessary. i would say weekly or maybe 5 days if she feels energetic

I commend your sister on doing the daily water changes for the betta that is living in a bowl with no filter but...bettas will always do better in a filtered tank. This does not mean that just because there is a filter on the tank that you can slack off on water changes. Of course, with a filter on the tank, I doubt that daily water changes will be necessary but definetly weekly water changes are a must.

If it's a large enough bowl, every other to every 3rd day water changes are a must.

I would prefer filtration.

once they gain their strength back, bettas usually have no problems dealing with current from a filter. at first it might seem like the fish is having a very hard time, but that's because they are weak from just sitting around all the time. bettas will use every last inch of the space they are given, whether it's a bowl or a 50g community tank.

They look a whole lot better in the 50g.

my betta in my 35gal, swims around the filter inlet all the time, constantly, and not once have I seen his fins even move like they were going to get sucked in,even when he has them right up against the intake.

the current doesnt bother him much either I dont think, he avoids it, but generally seems quite content.

i also recommend a heater if possible. bettas really need 80-82 degrees F

wtf 80 - 82?? really???
oh man *runs off to set temp up on heater*
