I'm looking to setup a 20g long tank on my dresser. I was wondering if this would be too noisy? I'm not quite sure. I don't want the tank to be anywhere else... If anyone has some insight please let me know.

If you get a good filter it shouldnt be noisy at all

what constitutes as a good filter? I've had a tank a while back a 10g hex and it had a biowheel. Should I be looking at one of those? Anyone else have recommendations on a "good filter" (read quiet)

the most quiet filter would probrably be a canister (eheim brand is VERY quiet) next to that would be an aqauclear HOB.

:iagree:

Also, b/c the noise from your filter, if you think it might still be a bit too loud, concider how high you fill your water level... ;)

Either way, if the noise bothers you at first, dont worrie, you will get used to it. Any noise that you have comming from your current H.O.B. should still be very minimal. I too have a bio-wheel in my bedroom and i cant hear it.

for the absolute quietest, you could go with a bunch of internal filters. the ones that go inside of your tank.

I have an Aquaclear 30 and I can barely hear it run, but I also tend to find the constant noise of the water flowing very relaxing.

A Fluval 3+ would do the trick. It is fully submersable so can be 100% silent. I used one in a 23 gallon and it kept the water crystal clear. Just set it up to be 100% underwater.

My apt is small and I can hear both of mine from my bed, it's kid of nice....Not really noisey unless the water has evaporated off the top a bit...Even then I don't mind much.

I have a 30g with a penguin bio wheel in my room. It doesn't bother me. Just make sure you fill it all they way after water changes or you will hear the water running.

My Penguin 200 is quiet, although has a very mild hum from the motor.
the hum is sort of relaxing and cant be heard outside of my daughters bedroom at night. during the day you never hear it.

make sure your water level is correct and you wont hear water splashing either.

One of the reasons we got fish was BECAUSE of the filter noise! The "white noise" distracts form noisy bad neighbors.

thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'll look into one of the AC 30's or something of that nature!

My Whisper 30 is silent. I sleep with it next to my bed. Never really had to do any maintenance as far as a slow flow goes. I just change the Bio-Bag when it is full. That is it. Its that easy.

hmmmm.....I would recommend running a sponge filter along with a powerhead. Since everything is submersed, there is no noise at all......and....since it is a sponge filter, fry dont get sucked up.

My Fluval 205 is really quiet, can't hear it running at all. They may make a smaller model for a 10-20 gallon. I would recommend not getting an air pump (for air stone) though, that seems to be what's making the most noise on my tank.

The filter in the form of a canister filter should be as close to silent as you could ever want. I know the Rena series is and I would expect the same from the Fluval or the Eheim series. As nynikki pointed out, it is the air pump and the air stones that make the real sound. I find the sound of moving water soothing but it could make it harder to sleep at night. The spray bars of the canister filters can be positioned below the water so they don't make any water sounds at all. They oxygenate the water by keeping it moving near the surface where the gas exchange takes place. You were talking about putting the aquarium on top of your dresser but have you checked it to make sure it can hold the tank? If you wouldn't want an adult to sit on it, its probably not strong enough to hold a 20.

I have a whisper filter, and i love it. I can't sleep without hearing a filter now!

yea, i'm not going to put it on my dresser. I got decided to get a used metal stand instead. Not risking it. I think I'm just going to get a HOB filter something like a whisper or an aquaclear 30. I'm not going to be running any airstones or anything, just want some community fish so i can look at when I'm bored :D

i have a 15 gallon right next to my bed with an aquaclear 30 and i don't hear a thing and i do agree it is relaxing to hear the water trickiling a bit as i fall asleep.
