I had one 29 gallon I painted the back of black and I really liked the effect as I have very poor luck keeping backgrounds stucl on and looking nice.

I am just getting back into the fish hobby after a 10 year hiatus, just wonder what you guys think of painting the back of the tank (the outside of the tank of course ;) )

what colours have you done and what looks good ??

I am thinking of going some other colour then black, maybe a light surgical green colour or a sky blue, something to lighten the tank up a bit... but I liked the black that I had before it seemed to make the fish stand right out, especially with my black gracel that had 25% white coral in it to keep the ph up.

what say you, you experts of aquatica :) what colours do your wet pets like ?

i've done black and 3 shades of blue so far. i have not yet been able to find a latex acrylic enamel in a modest teal shade, and i've been looking for about 2 months.
in the meantime, i was thinking about going with a deep purple. i have a slew of 5 gals from garage sales that i usually paint first to see if i like the effect before i go on to paint larger tanks. i'll take pics tomorrow of the ones i have so far.

I always paint my tanks. I find it to be the easiest, cheapest, and best looking solution.

There are a few downsides to painting (lower resale, you can't turn it around if you scratch it, etc) although ive been told that you can take a razor blade and peel it off, although I've never tried it.

I think the only other color that would look natural would be blue, although there might be other choices.

I have the back of my 45 painted black, I did it so all my cords and hoses could not be seen and my heater would blend in better. I like the look of it so far, but I have yet to put anything in it.

I painted the back of all my tanks black, it does not come off easy so make sure it is something you really want to do.

I prefer to use black trashbags cut the size of the tank for a background, it lets you switch the tank around if you scratch the front. I prefer black because black makes fishes colours stand out. I use dark gravel with the background, and it highlights my fish very well.

I have most mine painted black. Though for some, I have different colors of acryllic panels that can be slipped in or out.
