We got a feather duster the other day, our first one. we put in the tank and it has not moved, it is still alive. do they move themselfs or do you "plant" it where you want it?
Feather dusters don't actively move around. While they can exit their case, it's not something they do often, nor is it something that should be encouraged, as it leaves the worm vulnerable to being attacked / eaten.

The only thing I would add to FSN's post is have you seen the crown come out? Remember they are a filter feeder and should be placed in an area of medium flow. Below is a WWM link that has great information on these.

should we bury the end of it or leave it, we did prop it up on a rock, will that be a good place to leave it?

bury the bottom of the tube
I always just put mine in an area with fair water flow and use a drop of super glue to hold it in place. If you have a lot of light in your tank it will do better under an overhang .

I buried mine in the sand, leaving the last inch exposed. The crown can still get out easily like that for filter feeding. And I've since noticed that it attached itself to a rock under the sand.

so they don't like a lot of light huh, well we ended up setting it in a hole in a rock, but it can be moved, it is out most of the time but it has gone in too. I have found that if we let it just lay in the sand one of the fish comes and starts nipping at it and if its on the rock the damsel wont bother it. sitting in the rock like it is now, the bottom does not touch the sand, so we might need to move it.

they will glue themselves to a rock but i believe they prefer to be in the sand. maybe if you stand it up against the rock with the end buried the fish won't bother it. if they do then you'll probably have to have it up on the rock.
Mine doesn't mind light one bit. They like flow but not direct flow.
