View Full Version : Our Balls are Bigger

I live in Hamilton, Ontario. Our CFL Team is called The Hamilton Tigercats. Yes, we are last place in the league, but our fans are loyal and we are building. Our defense is solid (returned a interception for a TD yesterday) a strong kicker (he kicked a 60 yard Field Goal yesterday. I'm not kidding. 60 yards with no wind.) We have recently added Jason Armstead, one of the best WR's in the league. He is also used as a kick/punt returner on Special Teams. But the pride of Hamilton is a kid named Jesse Lumsden. A university phenom, he would be the equivelent of LaDanian Tomlinson in the NFL. This kid is averaging 8 yards/carry. How did we make it to last place you ask??? We don't have a reliable quarterback. Two weeks ago Jesse ran for 211 yards, and we still lost. Everytime this kid touches the ball it's magic. He was cut by The Washington Redskins after an injury at training camp prevented him from displaying his talent. The previous year Seattle promised him a look in a Monday night game. He never saw the field and was cut the next day. He has an upright running style and relishes coctact, often running over defenders rather than around them. I have included a link to an article about Jesse for those who are interested.

Canadian Football League... even though not a fan of football I must admit that our CFL athletes are not overpaid spoiled brats like in some other sports. Quite a few of the players in the league actually have paying jobs in the offseason. My sister went to highschool in Mississauga, ON and during the off season one of her teachers was Pinball Clemens who played for the Argos I believe.

That kid isn't all that.
8 games he averages 78 yds a game. That one big game probably got him the 8 ypc stat.
minus that 211 you mentioned and in 7 games he has just over 400 yrds. Or do you guys use meters in the CFL?
Besides the 211 yrd game he only has 1 other 100 yrd game. Read stats before you try and BS football fans.

This year he has carried the ball 74 times, for 647 yards. That is 8.5 yards/carry. He has 3 TD's and 1 fumble. This kid is all that.

I love it when guys like you say he isn't all that. At 23 he has already done more than you will ever do. He inspires those around him with his quiet confidence. He often sneaks into the childrens hospital unannounced so he can spend time with the kids without subjecting them to the reporters cameras. How many yards/carry do you average. How many are inspired by your quiet confidence. How often do you do charity work in your community all the while trying to avoid the glare of the spotlight??? Jesse Lumsden on a bad day is twice the man you are on a good day.

"Thirty-eight toss," says quarterback Jon Behie in the huddle. That means the three back running into the eight hole. Jonnie takes the snap, pivots, tosses the ball to Jesse, who starts outside, dodges a tackler.
"I knew they didn't respect his speed," Behie says. "And there he went." Bolting for the right sideline, his short strides a blur, the Central Tech players reduced to looking like kids chasing a man, he races 75 yards to the end zone.
Later, another play, one that will come to be known to those who saw it as The Run. Nimble Behie rolls to his left, dumps it off to Jesse, who starts up the middle, then to the left side, breaks one tackle, a second and third.
"Lumsden at the 35," says the play-by-play announcer, Hamilton's Clint (Bubba) O'Neil. "At the 40, breaking tackles, he's at midfield -- Lumsden! Look at him go!"
HE PICKS UP speed toward the sideline then reverses his field, cuts back to the middle, breaks a fourth tackle, dodges a fifth and sixth with speed and power and agility. Bubba goes crazy as the romp continues --"Lumsden! Lumsden! Lumsden!" -- and Jesse, surely exhausted, finds yet another gear, sprints downfield -- "Lumsden! Lumsden!" -- 90 yards in all before he's tripped up.
"Arguably, the best single play I've seen -- ever," says Nelson coach Bob Stacey.

It took a game of 12 carries for 211 yrds to get him that 8.5 ypc stat. A game in which he rushed for 18 ypc.
Look at his other game stats.
Jun 30th- 9 times 46 yrds
July 7th- 7 times 15 yrds
July 14 - 10 for 79 yrds
July 19th- 11 for 158 yrds
July 27th- 5 for 68 yrds
Aug 3rd 12 for 211 yrds
Aug 11 - 8 for 38 yrds
Aug 25th- 7 for 35 yrds
Sep 3rd - didn't play
Lets take out his 2 BIG games and we have
6 games- 46 carries for 281 yrds a 6.1 ypc avg. Still not bad though except the 3 TDs. Looks like he doesn't score unless he breaks a big run. A 47 yrds per game average.
You know what we call these backs in the NFL?
3rd down backs.
I wasn't attacking him as a person just his talent...

Wow he really has some amazing moves i liked when he hurdled the defender i always love those. Have to keep my eye on this McGuffie kid. When i used to go to McMaster games (Go Mauraders!!!) watching Jesse bust moves was more like that. His CFL highlight reel is kinda lame, but as you can see he has great vision. I'll try to find a link with some of his moves from university, he literally runs over the defences.

this kid may SEEM like all that, but lets be honest.... CFL vs NFL
its a little bit different trying to run the ball against the baltimore ravens or the new england patriots then it is ANYBODY in the CFL.
The teams would not over look him that much. If he had that much talent then he would be in the NFL. He is obviously just a good CFL fit, and thats all he will ever be.

Well to be honest Joe i kinda hope your right, he's a hometown hero, he went to high school here, university here, and now he play hard for the last place team in the league. I would like to see him go to the NFL, but I'm just as happy to watch his CFL highlight reel get better and better. It's only his second year and he already seems to be settling in nicely. I'm going to Toronto to hopefully get some revenge for the pounding they gave us on Monday (I won tickets on the radio for Mondays "Labour Day Classic", TWO BOXSEATS!!! FREE BOOZE, FREE FOOD, and we went to the game in the Ticat community Cruiser, or Catmobile if you like) The CFL is not the NFL, but let me tell you something. The NFL and the CFL had one crossover game in history. The Hamilton TigerCats versus the Buffalo Bills. (Buffalo is about an hour or so away from here, not counting the border crossing) Fifty points if you can tell me who won that game.:owned:

I kind of beg to differ. You might be to young Jo but Doug Flutie was a great College QB at BC and also great in the USFL. But every NFL team thought he was to small, though he did play shortly with Bears as a backup and starter for the Patriots when they sucked and didn't care about winning. He went to the CFL and racked up records at a quick pace plus 3 Grey Cups.
When he returned to the NFL with the Bills he was a Pro Bowler. Imagine if he had stayed in the NFL how many records he could have broken. If only the NFL would recognize not only talent but heart.
The CFL isn't the NFL but there is a lot of talent in that league.

1961 Tiger Cats 38 Bills 21... But they played CFL rules. Much different then NFL rules.
From the site : The Bills were befuddled by the Canadian rules, suffered a rash of preseason injuries, and used untested rookies who were not familiar with their system, having practiced less than two weeks.
Not much to brag about IMO lol.... Besides that was an AFL team not NFL.

we pretty much have to win every game to make the playoffs. waaaaaaaaaaa. I liked what you said about Flutie though, its true he was amazing and could run like the wind. Played for the Argo's before he retired, while we had his brother Darren (a WR). Made for a good rivalry. But TiCats fans naturally hate the Argo's. Flutie actually wanted to come to Hamilton and play with his brother at one point, but the deal went sour.

Good things are happening here in the Hammer. Seems Kansas City has no room for Casey Printers, who was named the CFL's most outstanding player in 2004 with the B.C. Lions when he threw for 5,088 yards and 35 touchdowns, helping to lead the Lions to the Grey Cup final in Ottawa. Could this be another Flutie??? We're in the hunt (with about five other teams) to get him in the Black and Gold. Our QB situation is desperate. Our owner (Bob Young) has deep pockets, and the fans are howling mad. This could be the last piece of the puzzle. I smell a dynasty woot woot!!!

I’ve Got Your Number
(Stat of the Week)
Despite losing to the Argos, Hamilton walked away with a couple impressive individual accomplishments. Nick Setta’s 91-yard punt, is the longest of 2007, and the third longest in Ticats history. Brock Ralph’s 88-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown eclipses the CFL’s previous deep ball this season by 15 yards. Nautyn McKay-Loescher’s eight sacks have him tied for the league lead, and fellow defender Zeke Moreno, sits atop the CFL with 69 tackles

Here is what the buzz is in Hamilton.
Printers in flying to Montreal to sign a one year deal. He checks his Blackberry in Cincinatti and hears about the TiCats huge offer. He phones his agent and is advised to fly back to Dallas. The Argonauts then offer the same amount, but Ticats owner Bob Young (we call him "The Caretaker") has prominent Hamilton businessmen phone Printer's agent and say they would be interested in using Printers services to promote their businesses. Apparently, this REALLY impressed both the agent and Printers. He is on a plane heading to Hamilton to sign the deal. Barring the Argo's or Al's trying to hijack the plane on the way, it's time to raise up your heads here in Hamilton. Go Tabbies!!!!! Oski Wee Wee!!!!

Have you ever watched Arena Football? I'm guessing from the few CFL games I've watched that they are very similar rules. Only difference being its inside and has shorter fields.
charlie_stubbs
09-07-2007, 9:04 AM
I haven't watched much Arena Football, it does look similar though. In three down football the QB becomes that much more important. We also have no fair catch rule, pretty scary sometimes for the returner. A CFL field is wider and longer than an NFL field. Notice the position of the uprights in our end zones. Some funny highlight reels when people run into them hahaha. Our balls are bigger. Another difference between CFL, NFL, and NCAA balls is the type of stripe applied (or not). Canadian balls have a complete white stripe around the football 1 inch (25 mm) from each end, NCAA balls have broken stripes, and NFL balls have no stripes.

High drama, international intrigue, e-mailed contracts and airport shuffles.
Not to mention the missing passport.
No, it's not a Robert Ludlum plot line but all of the elements, particularly the passport, that played a part in the biggest Tiger-Cat coup in nearly a decade, the blockbuster signing of star quarterback Casey Printers.

Ice, in response to what you said to me last, yes i know doug flutie. I live about 20 minutes away from where i went to college and he played for the pats as well. He was a good player yes, but i wouldnt exactly put him among top quarter backs. Doug Flutie played in the NFL before the CFL (i think it was cfl at least?) , but he didnt do well. Yes his teams were not very good, but the NFL GM's didnt think he could cut it, and thats why he went to the CFL. He had his chance, and didnt do well, so he went off elsewhere to get better. He got better IMO in the CFL and then came back with more confidence as well as skill, and was able to make it back, and become a good quarter back.
But two things.
1. How often do you see this? Not very often.
2. It sounds like this CFL kid doesnt even have the raw talent it takes to play in the NFL. He doesnt play quarterback, he plays running back, and running back takes raw talent, not so much football IQ like a QB would. If he doesnt have the raw talent now, and he didnt have the raw talent in NFL camp, then its highly unlikely that he will ever develop the raw talent needed to be an NFL running back.
Now im not saying that he wont ever be a back up, or that he wont ever be in the NFL, just highly doubt that he will ever be a star.
You also have to look at how athleticism has increased over the years. Doug flutie had an opportunity because the talent in the league was not as great. The people were not as fast, as strong, as quick, or as over all talented as they are now. You could argue about old time players, and how amazing they were, and you are right. They were amazing, and they are legends for that reason. But if you look at the overall talent of teams, it is much higher now than it was in flutie's prime.
Hope i got my point across.
charlie_stubbs
09-12-2007, 8:22 AM
Joe, Flutie's sucess in the CFL was instant. For many years he was paid signifigantly more than the other players. There are about 5 million people in Toronto who bought a Flutie jersey when he became an Argo. I agree with Ice, the NFL didn't recognize the heart this guy brought to every game, and thought he couldn't perform in the NFL at a high level. They were flat out wrong.

Well, here's my latest CFL rant. Went to the Ti-Cats game. We got smoked!!! **** i suffered through a 1-17 season, now we're 1-10. ArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrGGGGGGGhhh hhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! Man it sucks losing game after game. Needless to say, the boobirds were singing last night in a dismal performance on both sides of the ball. Printers looked sharp at times, but has only been here a week and hasn't had time to adjust. It doesn't help that the offensive line can't hold back anyone, my kid sister could walk through them and get an autograph from Printers on any play. Man oh man. What good is a QB when all your recievers have the droppsies??? Not to mention our coach. Bad decisions all night. A couple of times we're third and a yard (remember the in the CFL there are only three downs) and the coach punts the ball away. Cmon!!. We're not only losing the game 31-4, we're losing the season 1-10. The coach actually sent the kicker in on a third and inches but Printers waved them off. How can we generate momentum when we're two and out every play?? The Cats can't seem to generate any offence, but our star RB (Jesse Lumsden) has missed three games so i hope to see him back soon.
