Can i use a rubber maid tub?

If i buy a rubber maid tub would this eventually wear out from the sun and crack?

I was thinking i might bury it!


Or is this a bad idea?


I only thought of this idea because i have like a 150 bucks in gift cards to target. This is from the holidays!

Heres the thing though:

They are either 29.99 or 39.99 for a 80-90 gallon.

I am just worried about the plastic no being able to hold up/the pond not coming out the way i wanted to if i use the tub.

What do you think?
 
You can get a 100gal rubbermaid stock tank for about 150 bucks I think. They are much heavier duty than anything you will find at target, and will hold up to being outside for many years.

I have one of the clear-ish sterilite tubs that has been on my porch for a year, and it is basically falling apart, pieces keep chipping off every time I try and pick it up. If you were only planning on using it for a year, you could do it but I wouldn't trust it long term.

If i were to bury it in the dirt wouldn't it keep the plastic from cracking and bulging if i fill in the sides well to keep it from settling.


I wanted to get something at target because i have some gift cards there.

I just recently 2-3 month ago bought a complete 30 gallon with oak stand so i don't really have any money to spend except for maybe a filter for the pond.
 
If you bury it, the ground will help with support, but the sunlight is what kills them. Most plastics not specifically designed for it will not hold up to long periods of exposure to UV rays, it breaks them down and they become brittle and crack.
 
Use the Target gift card to buy some nice clothes or stuff for the house, and save up to buy a good pond liner that you know will last you for years. When my husband or I want something really expensive we just put 40 to 50 dollars a side every pay period until we've accumulated the amount of money we need for the expensive item. You should try that.
 
Well, its not the best thing to use. They don't hold up at all and bow out on the sides from the weight of the water. However, they do somewhat better if they are buried. I do know a ponder that has some buried in his yard and he keeps water lilies in them. I believe they've been there for two years now.
 
Here you go, I found a picture of some of them. These are buried rubbermaid totes and he built a frame to cover the edge of them.

Something else you might want to consider it buying a 100 gallon rubbermaid stock tank. You can get them for around $65 at farm/feed stores. You could bury it or leave it sitting on the ground.

Also it is 16.99 for a 50gallon rubbermaid!

Unfortnately thats as high as they go.
 
As long as you bury it and cover the top edge (similiar to above) to keep the sun off you will be fine. With a little ingenueity you might be abke to link more than one in some sort of cascade fashion. Use one for a filter and another one or two for the actual pond.
